ONA Regular Part Time Availability:

During the last round of local bargaining,  the parties agreed to a Letter of Understanding that allows regular part time ONA nurses to provide their unavailability prior to the posted schedule based on the following conditions:

  • PT nurse may make themselves unavailable for 2 single days (non- consecutive) per schedule and 4 single days (non-consecutive) for the summer schedule
  • PT nurses will still be required to be available to  work their BECK
  • Unavailability does not apply to weekends, paid holidays, Christmas Eve and Halloween
  • Unavailable days cannot be carried over from one scheduling period to the next
  • If there are multiple requests for the same day then seniority prevails

Requests need to be submitted to the People Service Centre on the attached form, two weeks prior to the schedule  posting date.  Given the short turnaround time, requests for the posted schedule on April 8, 2022, requests are due by midnight on March 27, 2022.  Going forward, requests will be due on the Friday, 2 weeks prior to posting. Requests are to be emailed to KHSCPeopleServicesCentre @Kingstonhsc.ca

This Letter of Understanding will be for a trial period during the length of the current local agreement. The parties will be meeting on a quarterly basis to review the trial and address any issues that may arise.  The intent of this is to allow part time employees an avenue to request individual days off for personal appointments without the need to book off a full seven day stretch of vacation.

We welcome your feedback during this trial period!

Sincerely,

Annette Saccon                                      Laurie Hutchinson

ATTENTION: KHSC Part Time RN’s at both KGH Site and New to HD site.

If you are a “part time RN” at KHSC you are required to submit your Beck Forms for the Period of April 27, 2020 to October 11, 2020, Submit No later then February 15, 2020 to your manager.

Beck forms are printable from this page, right column, under heading Forms, second item down or on your unit, or unit manager.

HD site Part Time RN’s this is new so do not forget to complete.

ATTENTION: All temporary fulltime KGH site- KHSC members,

If you have been denied overtime premium for any additional non-scheduled shift, your local needs to hear from you ASAP.

KGH has been denying overtime if the pay period is less than 75 hours (i.e. DDNN pay period that is 5 or 6 shifts). KHSC claims that they do not have to pay overtime until you exceed 75 hours; however, they are not paying overtime when your regular schedule is greater than 75 hours (i.e. 7 or 8 shifts regular rotation).

ONA is filing a policy grievance for this to stop and a group grievance to include names and dates for members owed premium.

Please email us at khscbup@onalocal99.org with subject line “TEMPORARY FULLTIME” (nothing else in subject line, please.).

Email to include: your name, unit, home contact, date of additional shifts, and a copy of paystubs showing you were not paid premium.

A Professional Responsibility Complaint is not a Grievance!

It is your professional responsibility to report unsafe patient care/practice concerns to your employer. The tool available to assist is the ONA Professional Responsibility Workload Report Form (PRWRF). Failure to comply with your professional obligation of reporting is considered professional misconduct (see College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Reference Document, Legislation and Regulation: Professional Misconduct, p.12). You may choose to report to both the employer and the CNO.

KHSC Missed Shift Remedy

Missed shift Remedy If a nurse has been missed for an additional shift, the affected nurse will be offered a shift as a supernumerary staff member to be worked at a time mutually agreed to by the nurse and their manager. The extra shift will be paid at the rate of pay which the nurse would have received had the offer been made according to the Collective Agreement

When a nurse is scheduled to work supernumerary shift and a staffing deficiency subsequently arises for that shift which requires replacement, the hospital will make every reasonable effort not to utilize the nurse scheduled for the supernumerary shift as the replacement and will make every reasonable to find a replacement in accordance with its usual practice and the provisions of the Collective Agreement.

The Union will be advised of the date of the supernumerary shift.

Supernumerary:  In excess of the regular number

  • Above the staffing Complement, so when a unit is staffed the quantity of nurse resources required to staff the current capacity and acuity of patients.
  • Unit cannot float a nurse to reduce number below baseline for capacity plus one (1)
  •  Supernumerary nurse is required to take an assignment, not just be there as helping hands (assignment to be divided equally between all nurses so assignment should  be slightly lighter)
